Kinja'd!!!

Well many of you have followed and thanks to a fellow oppo Tim I was able to complete a LS swap into my datsun and even daily drive it for about 7 months.

After those 7 months I ended up spinning a rod bearing and losing all motivation to work on the Datsun. I even swapped a 4.8 and 6.0 in the car and had them running but for this or that reason I never drove the car again after spinning that first 5.3 liter.

Kinja'd!!!

So for the past month I’ve been focused on selling the datsun and moving on. Which brings me to this past weekend. After discussing with a buyer in Kentucky who was to come down Saturday to purchase the car I was approached by a very “Dallas Buyer”. I had taken a deposit from the buyer in Kentucky and had started telling folks the car was spoken for when I was approached by the cars new owner. He made it very clear that he wanted the car and was not thrilled about waiting.

As I woke up the “Dallas Buyer” had sent a text letting me know he wanted the car. I responded to his text letting him know the car was already spoken for as we had discussed. This is when good things happened to my wallet. The Dallas Buyer offered a number 1k more than the car was spoken for and then upped his own offer 200 more dollars before I could return his text.

Kinja'd!!!

Now I’m a man of my word but $1200 more than the guy who sent a deposit is too much to pass up not to mention the car will stay in my state and I may see it at a local cars & coffee or race. I called Kentucky and let him know I’d be returning his deposit and that the car was sold. He was livid as he should be but was unable to match the offer made by “Dallas Buyer”

Kinja'd!!!

Anyhow I ended up getting $5200 for my 1976 280z ROLLER with junkyard aluminum 5.3 LM4 and driver side frame rust.

I win.

“Now I’m a man of my word”

“but $1200 more than the guy who sent a deposit is too much to pass up”

The mental gymnastics you did to write those two statements one after the other would give most people an aneurysm.

ETA: It looks like I’m judging you and I am totally judging you for selling your car out from under someone else but it’s your car and your wallet. Good to see you still posting. You doing anything with that S10 or keeping it stock?

Just before law school, I sold my ‘88 Camry wagon 5M - listed for $6850, first guy called and said he was coming over with 7 grand in cash. I said OK. I had a couple other calls (remember, this was ‘97 and you had to advertise in the newspaper) that beat the first guy by a few hundred bucks, but I sold it to the guy with 7 grand. Landscape gardener - he thought the Camry was perfect as an auxiliary vehicle. Still miss that car.

sounds like the deal was already done with kentucky before you gave it to dallas.

integrity......... $1200 doesnt buy it.

$100 deposit doesn’t cover a larger offer.

Not to make excuses for what I did but I’m 26 years old and I need every penny I can get. It would be different if I were financially stable and well established.

I don’t give a lot of insight to my financial status in this post. Anyhow, I would have given the kid the car for 4k if I didn’t truly need the funds.

Anybody giving you shit for accepting an offer more than 25% higher than the first guy can eat all the dicks. If I was selling a car for $4k and somebody offered $5200...man I’ve got a kid, $1200 buys a lot of diapers. Good for you.

Who knows if the guy from Kentucky would’ve come through anyway. Why did he put the deposit down but not pick it up?

Granted, he has every right to be pissed but if you need the $1200 you need it. It's a lot easier for people to throw stones but only you know your situation and $1200 can mean a lot more to one person than it can to another.

Kind of an assholish thing to do, but I can’t say I wouldn’t do the same thing. $1200 is a few months car payments or insurance, food, etc. I understand where you are coming from.

Total dick move. That happened to me once, only worse. I drove the 4hrs to pick it up as agreed. Asshole wouldn’t even come to the door. He texted me saying someone local called an hour after I was on my way, and just left with the vehicle 5 mins before I got there. Could of at least offered me gas money.

its one thing to leave a deal open ended, in an OBO way, and NOT take any money until you have found THE buyer...... its something entirely different to take a deposit on it, as that basically is saying its yours, bring the rest.

we’re all young once.

a mans word is only as good as his integrity........ learn to do the right thing because its the right thing to do.

Yeah.. I was pissed. I don’t even know if the guy offered him more. I vowed to never to never do that to someone. I won’t even show a car to someone else if there’s someone on the way.

Ya’ll realize I was selling a roller with aluminum 5.3 LM4 and super rare CLSD R200 and the kid in Kentucky couldn’t pay any more money and only gave me a $100 deposit not the $500 dollar deposit I requested. When another offer came in for 25% more I wasn’t going to pass it up. All I’m saying is if you sold a 20k car and someone offered 25k would you hold it for $100 and take a 5k hit ? didn’t think so.

I also paid the kentucky kid 150 so he made 50 bucks for his time. He didn’t even leave his city either.

heres the thing..... if the kid couldnt come up with the deposit that you request, you have the OPTION to tell the kid that doesnt work for you and NOT accept his money.....

......... BUT ......

....... by accepting his money you agreed to hold it for him FOR THAT $100.......

...... your ONLY other option, is to say, upon declaration of the deposit(surety money) , that “the money holds it for X amount of time to come up with the rest.” if he doesnt come up with the rest of the money when the time expires, it is fair to THEN make an alternate deal for whatever money. surety money refund/forfeit is agreed to at the time the original deal is agreed to.

YOU have the option when selling to say OBO (or best offer). AND when you talk to people that want to give you a deposit, you tell them that you are waiting to hear other offers. get their number, and tell them you will get back to them. and NOT take any money until you have decided who you are selling to. IF the person buying is serious they WILL wait a few days.

IF i agree to hold something for someone, i HOLD that something, REGARDLESS of the amount of money down, or the amount offered against it.... its called integrity.

money doesnt buy the things that MATTER.......
